Chinese Lack Qualified Corporate Translators And Interpreters Voiced Enterprises In Survey Unveiled in Beijing By Translation Association of China

Translation Association of China (TAC) cosponsored annual conference ended on May 22, 2011 after bringing 300 translation and interpretation scholars discussing China and globalization demands. TAC member survey shows 68% enterprises believe the current Chinese translation industry is short of professional training and cultivation underscoring TAC’s belief that only a small portion of the one million people who are providing translation service in China hold professional qualifications.

The International Permanent Conference of University Institutes of Translators and Interpreters (CIUTI) was co-sponsored by Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) home of the first modern translation education in China, established in 1979 with courses from the United Nations. The 2011 conference focused on facilitating communication between China and the world in translating and interpreting education; underscored by TAC president Li Zhaoxing opening remark "with the development of globalization, the Chinese business of translation has been committed to serving the people of China and the world".

It’s hard to get an accurate number of professionals providing Chinese translation, interpretation and localization world wide without reliable official  statistics. The lack of official statistics within China also makes it hard for Translation Association of China to report of the million Chinese people providing translation service how many hold professional qualifications. When evaluating international Chinese language service providers, large localization companies usually maintain membership in the associations of their largest market countries, while small or single service providers maintain membership in the geographic locations they are located in.
