What is the difference between Duplication and Replication?
Duplicating DVDs is taking an original disc, and burning copies of it on blank discs, while also printing labels. The combination of printing and burning is also called publishing.
Replicating DVDs is a different process that does not involve burning blank discs: discs are manufactured along with the replication process. DVD Replication is a very technical process involving expensive machines to produce a glass master, and a nickel stamper.
How does this matter to me?
While you do not need to know the technical differences between the two processes, you should know the following if you are having us produce DVDs:
- Replication has higher setup costs than duplication, but lower unit costs. The break point is around 1,000 DVDs.
- Replication achieves higher DVD compatbility rates than Duplication.
- Labels on replicated DVDs are created with different technology and usually look better than those printed on duplicated DVDs.
What are JBI Studios' capabilities for Duplication and Replication?
Duplication and Replication is a service that we offer as a convenience to clients needing a turnkey solution. Duplication is done entirely in house using top of the line Primera machines. Replication is done through a partner also located in Los Angeles.
