What is Blu-ray Disc?
Blue-ray Disc is the new generation of DVDs. The Blu-ray Disc has the physical dimensions as standard DVDs, and is capable of much greater storage: 25GB for a single sided disc, and 50GB for a double sided disc.
This new standard was in competition with HD DVD until February 2008, when Toshiba pulled out the race after major Hollywood studios decided to go with Sony's Blu-ray Disc.
It is set to replace DVDs both as a storage medium (data DVD) and as a video medium (DVD Video). It is able to store and play feature length video at full HD resolution: 1920x1080. This is due both to advancement in storage technology (it stores 5 times more data on same size disc), and in video compression technology (mpeg2 or and mpeg4)
Are Blu-ray discs used for corporate content?
No, distribution stays problematic since users need to have Blu-ray players, either standalone or through their PS3. Blu-ray discs are for the moment used to distribute entertainment content.
JBI Studios uses Adobe Encore DVD to author Blu-ray discs, but we can also use them as a simple storage medium if you have reading capabilites and would rather receive/archive your files using such discs, rather than a pile of DVDs or a more costly external hard drive.
